 October 2011 Newsletter

Greetings,

What is church?

A building? A specific group of people? Which people? What is it's purpose?

This has been the question LCA students have been asked to ponder in Bible class these first months of school. Their teacher, Pastor Rob, is pushing them think critically about why they go to church and what they think they're accomplishing when they do. Is it a routine, an obligation, a privilege, for good luck? Does going to church make them Christians? Are they Christians if they don't go? Does church end on Sunday? Is it the center of their lives or just a piece of it? Is it weird to go more than once a week?

Students are also being asked about why they often don't go to church or don't enjoy it when they do go? Bad music, too long, boring sermons? Too many hypocrites? Too judgmental? Always the same?

Amid all of the possible considerations, complaints, criticisms and indifference, Pastor Rob has asked the students to focus in on one thing: the supernatural.

The church is supposed to be a place and time where we experience the supernatural. If we consider many of our issues with and ideas of church many of them hang on the fact that church typically represents something so natural, man-made and religious. We get discouraged, frustrated or just bored of the place or activity we call "church" because we're missing the one thing it's supposed to be about - a supernatural experience with our God.

The same goes for school. We make it into so many different things of our own and forget God. But what if school too was a place to experience the supernatural, a place to hear from God and share that Spirit between teachers and students and parents. Would we look at it the same?

This Friday on October 28th the LCA is partnering with the Lighthouse Church to sponsor a Miracle Healing Crusade at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. The event will be one night only beginning at 7:30pm. There will be no charge and no offering taken. The goal is simply to see the sick and injured of our community healed and set free by the power of Jesus Christ. The goal is to experience the supernatural, a power and love beyond us. For more information read the attached article on the crusade or call 310.829.2522.

Please come and bring everyone you know. Bring anyone you know who is sick, injured, addicted or suffering. Come just to see what "church" is all about - the miraculous.

Hope to see you there. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Jack Mefford

Miracle Healing Crusade

A Miracle Healing Crusade will held this Friday at 7:30pm at the Santa Monica Civic Center Auditorium located at 1855 Main St. (just north of Pico Blvd). The event is free and sponsored by the Lighthouse Church in Santa Monica.
Pastor Mitchell

It's keynote speaker is Pastor Wayman Mitchell. For over 30 years Mitchell has pastored The Potter's House Christian Fellowship Church in Prescott, AZ which under his leadership, has panted and directed over 1,000 churches in 50 countries. In great demand, his international ministry regularly takes him around the world preaching Healing Crusades and Conferences.

The following is an excerpt from Pastor Mitchell's book "Healing: Commission, Confrontation, Compelling Witness":

One of the Redlands crusade's most notable miracles came because someone persevered. A severely crippled man, on crutches, came for prayer. He had been injured in a fall and was in pain. After prayer he was significantly better and said so, but he was'n' totally healed. I asked him, as I often do, to stand to one side and watch while I went on ministering to others.

I do this for several reasons. One, as he watched, his faith would grow. Secondly the crowd watching would not perceive a defeat which could prompt unbelief to grow. Third, it must be remembered that the crowd is an important part of the crusade and their interest must be maintained. It is easily lost in long drawn out person interactions.

As this man stepped aside, one of our evangelists began to talk with him and encourage him to act out his faith. He got him to move, to test himself for pain and to move some more. Without any further involvement he was totally healed and able to putdown his crutches. The evangelist recognized, as I have for many years, the importance of acting on faith. This miracle, perhaps the most significant of the crusade, did not occur in the 'limelight' but off to the side as someone worked with a man not totally healed but, 'touched.' The passive approach to healing in most churches would have left this man felling better, but not healed. The passive, 'waiting on God' theology taught in many churches, is a substantial hindrance to healing. It teaches that faith is an intellectual exercise.

Faith, indeed, is something you believe. But it is also something you say and something you do. Faith must be demonstrated...

The redemptive name, "The Lord our Healer," has been replaced in many churches with a theology of suffering that evades responsibility, trusts in formula prayers, is filled with unbelief and waits doubtfully in inaction. Biblical healing, however, is always actively pursued and the result of dominion over the power of the devil. It is aggressive faith that pleases God. Aggressive faith is possible only though understanding that God's will is to heal the sick.

Student Essay
The following is an essay written by Freshman Zechariah Symonds for his history class, Introduction to Western Civilization.

Marriage

Marriage is a sacred promise to someone of the opposite gender to love them until death, but unfortunately people all around the world are breaking that promise. God instituted marriage in the Creation because not until man and woman were created did God say it was very good. Marriage is a covenant that was meant to be unbreakable except by death. Marriage is supposed to be an example of God's love for us.

God established marriage as a concept from the beginning. When only Adam was made in Creation, it was not good, but then God made Eve and it became very good. This illustrates that man and woman are meant to be together. The family, with husband and wife, is the center of society, so if husbands and wives continue splitting up then the entire society will start to deteriorate. The whole purpose of marriage is to make Godly offspring and if the husband and wife split up, then it will affect the children in a negative way. This would make it harder to show the kids God's love when you can't even show it to the person you've said you love the most in the world.

Marriage is a promise that is never meant to be broken unless by death. Some think of it as a contract, which means that if the other person doesn't do what you expect them to then you can just leave. Marriage is not a contract; it is an unbreakable vow to stay with that person until death. This means a legal divorce is not an option to separate yourself from that person. People are typically married at an altar because the alter is where you make a promise to God, and you break that promise when you divorce.

God cares about marriage because it is supposed to reflect His love for us. His love for us can never be broken or altered in any way, and that is the way you are supposed to love your spouse. Marriage is supposed to teach us about sacrifice and commitment, and people who don't want to sacrifice or can't commit to someone are the same people who won't understand why or how God could still love us after all the things we've done.

Without marriage in American or any other place for that matter, then there wouldn't be true Christian families or Godly children who truly follow god with all their heart. If everyone sees marriage as a contract that is breakable by divorce, then they won't be able to teach their children why or how God could ever love us as as bad as we are, then there wouldn't be much of a Gospel to spread throughout the world. If people get divorced, it's much harder to understand the point of sacrificing themselves for the good of others because that is what people do in marriage throughout their lives. That is also what Jesus did for us on the cross when he sacrificed Himself up there for the good of all mankind.

Alumni Update
James McKinnon, Class '07

I married Joy McKinnon 2 years ago, after we'd been together for 7 years. We were blessed with a beautiful baby girl Eleanor Moon McKinnon on Christmas Eve 2010. We lived in San Francisco for 5 years where I worked as Production Manager for McCall Associates, one of San Francisco's largest event management firms. I was privileged to manage and design events for Apple, NASA, Chevron, Sales Force, and San Francisco's Historical Black and White Ball. We LOVED the city; however, we felt that we should be closer to family if we were going to start one of our own.

We took a leap and moved to Ojai California. I now find myself back in the fashion industry, where I work for a jewelry/apparel company called Love Heals near our home in Ojai. I am a Senior Sales Executive at Love Heals managing over 300 national/international accounts. Our company works extensively with non-profits like Greener Ethiopia planting 10 trees with every piece we sell with over 600,000 trees planted to date.

I am also partner and VP Business Development for Hipstrict.com, on online shopping and lifestyle site that will be launching October 1st to over 1 million customers. My wife Joy is able to stay at home and be a wonderful mama.

I was a touring musician for a long while, I've put out a few records as well as doing some scoring for film. I still continue to write and compose, I just don't have the desire to continue touring. I like being at home way too much.

Overall, I am so grateful to where life has taken me.
