October 2011

Greetings,

What is church?

A building? A specific group of people? Which people? What is it’s purpose?

This has been the question LCA students have been asked to ponder in Bible class these first months of school. Their teacher, Pastor Rob, is pushing them think critically about why they go to church and what they think they’re accomplishing when they do. Is it a routine, an obligation, a privilege, for good luck? Does going to church make them Christians? Are they Christians if they don’t go? Does church end on Sunday? Is it the center of their lives or just a piece of it? Is it weird to go more than once a week?

Students are also being asked about why they often don’t go to church or don’t enjoy it when they do go? Bad music, too long, boring sermons? Too many hypocrites? Too judgmental? Always the same?

Amid all of the possible considerations, complaints, criticisms and indifference, Pastor Rob has asked the students to focus in on one thing: the supernatural.

The church is supposed to be a place and time where we experience the supernatural. If we consider many of our issues with and ideas of church many of them hang on the fact that church typically represents something so natural, man-made and religious. We get discouraged, frustrated or just bored of the place or activity we call “church” because we’re missing the one thing it’s supposed to be about – a supernatural experience with our God.

The same goes for school. We make it into so many different things of our own and forget God. But what if school too was a place to experience the supernatural, a place to hear from God and share that Spirit between teachers and students and parents. Would we look at it the same?

This Friday on October 28th the LCA is partnering with the Lighthouse Church to sponsor a Miracle Healing Crusade at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. The event will be one night only beginning at 7:30pm. There will be no charge and no offering taken. The goal is simply to see the sick and injured of our community healed and set free by the power of Jesus Christ. The goal is to experience the supernatural, a power and love beyond us. For more information read the attached article on the crusade or call 310.829.2522.

Please come and bring everyone you know. Bring anyone you know who is sick, injured, addicted or suffering. Come just to see what “church” is all about – the miraculous.

Hope to see you there. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Jack Mefford
Vice Principal
Lighthouse Christian Academy
