Our Mission: In Pursuit of Excellence
The Lighthouse Christian Academy’s mission is to train up young men and women in the most excellent way – Love. We believe that true love is established by the Word of God and exemplified in the life of Jesus Christ. Understanding Biblical love and its many attributes equips students to live life and enjoy relationships the way God intended. Our approach to developing this understanding rests upon the characteristics of love as defined in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. From that passage we have built our learning community on the following principles:
Love shows goodwill – First and foremost, we want school to be enjoyable. Jesus came to bring us abundant life, and although we will experience struggles, we are meant to triumph over those trials in joy. LCA has designed its schedule, classes and activities with unprecedented flexibility and customization meant to meet the diverse talents, interests, and needs of its student body. While maintaining rich and challenging academic programs, we also want our curriculum and programs to integrate practically into real life. Rather than restrain students within the confines of a typical school environment and schedule, we want to set them free to pursue the good, pleasing, and unique call that God has placed on each one of their lives.
Love rejoices in the truth – At LCA knowledge itself is not our end, but the appropriation of knowledge through faith to the attainment of true wisdom. Seeking truth is at the heart of education. As Christians we recognize that truth is not ultimately found in the memorization of facts or earning grades for the sake of credits and personal advancement. Truth is found by faith in recognizing man’s relationship to God as his creator. Finding truth directs us to take responsibility for ourselves as sinful creatures in need of a savior, and it requires a willingness to build not only academic skills, but also Godly character that embraces personal discipline and accountability. Rejoicing in the truth means that there is a spiritual dimension to education that makes what happens in our classrooms take on eternal significance.
Love keeps no record of wrongs –In the classroom we aim to teach our students to reach individual goals of understanding. Too often daily classroom work simply becomes a means to passing a test. This attitude leads to teaching purely to the test, with an emphasis not on the joy of learning but the work of earning a grade. School should not be all about earning a score or credits, rather it should focus on whether useful and successful learning is actually being accomplished. LCA teachers implement a full array of assessments to encourage students to love the act of learning and explore subjects in which they are personally interested. We recognize that every student’s background, strengths, weaknesses, and goals are different, and we want to help them become capable to pursue the unique call that God has for their lives. While our teachers and staff fully prepare students for collegiate exams and testing methods, they are also taught to assess and cultivate what each student knows and enjoys.
Love is not self-seeking – We want our students to remember that education is ultimately not about personal achievement but about learning how to serve others. Love is not proud, rude, or boastful, and although it is important for students to be independent, confident learners, satisfaction comes only when those abilities are used to serve those around them. We believe that the nuclear family provides the greatest arena for learning and personal growth, and so we make every effort to promote parent-student relationship. While in school students are encouraged to see their peers, teachers, and larger community as those be respected, helped, and loved. Beyond this, our vision is global. The LCA is part of an international group of families and churches, and we endeavor to instill in each student a broad perspective that sees beyond him and herself to the opportunities, relationships and needs of others, even those around the world. Yearly trips throughout the United States and abroad help our students develop this global perspective.
Love never fails – LCA’s primary goal is to disciple young people in the love of Jesus Christ and to encourage them to walk with him for the rest of their lives. We are a ministry that wants students and families to experience the joy of salvation within themselves and within the relationships God has given them. No matter a student’s background, past mistakes or financial situation, as long as he or she expresses a willingness to pursue God’s most excellent way of love, LCA is committed to facilitating his or her success in every way possible, at any cost. We exist because of the God’s great love for us, and our paramount mission is to share that love with every student and family that walks through our doors.
